The
curriculum of the Personal Support Worker/Standardized Bridging Program
marks the culmination of a joint initiative of the Ontario Government
and the Ontario Community Support Association to revise the training
and education that prepares the various categories of support workers.
This program standardizes training and provides a solid education base
for both community and facility employment of support workers.
Education for support workers must prepare them to develop a broad
range of abilities far beyond dexterity skills. Workers must also be
taught to recognize the value of their role and provide not only for
their client, but also demonstrate sensitivity and respect for those in
their care. |

NACC PSW Standard
The curriculum package developed in response to member requests has at
its foundation the Ontario Community Support Association for the
Personal Support Worker program at the request of the Ministry of
Health.
NACC has supplemented this curriculum to include a comprehensive
program manual, instructor/student resource manual, performance
demonstrations, tests, quizzes, and assignments, and a skills passbook,
to ensure consistency in Personal Attendants. This training, combined
with the clinical component ensures that the graduates have the
knowledge and skills necessary to be successful as a Personal Support
Worker of Personal Assistant.
Final PSW Examination
The NACC final examination evaluates the theory component of the
training and determines whether the candidate has the required level of
knowledge to do the job. The external setting and marking provide
unbiased and consistent evaluation.
The Examination Service Committee of NACC was formed to monitor and
review the PSW/PA examination system. The Examination Services
Committee also serves as a resource for member colleges offering
support and advice and annual visits to confirm compliance with NACC
standards for delivery of the program.
Examinations are developed by the Committee with input from the
industry and Common Standards Group Colleges.
NACC offers the PSW/PS examination on a monthly basis.
Standardized curricula and third party examinations not only
demonstrate NACC’s commitment to promote nationals standards, but also
facilities, credit transfer, and mobility.
NACC Certificate and Pin
Successful students are awarded a numbered certificate and
corresponding numbered pin identifying the graduate as having
successfully passed the theory portion of the PSQ Program. |
